- for the effective prophylaxis of hardware disease (bovine traumatic reticulopericarditis)
- the rumen magnet in the plastic housing should be given to all healthy cattle in good time as a preventive measure. Its magnetic force is sufficient to collect ferrous foreign bodies and hold them in the cage space.
Foreign bodies hidden in the feed, such as nails, wire and metal splinters, pose a great risk to non-selective eating cattle: they enter the reticulum, where they can bore through the stomach wall in the course of the reticulum contractions necessary for the mixing and onward transport of the feed. This usually results in an infection of the abdominal cavity, followed by an inflammatory reaction. The organs surrounding the reticulum can also be traumatised. Early administration of a magnet to a cow suspected of having a foreign body can result in the recovery of the animal within two to three days. If the animal is not treated, the foreign body may migrate and cause peritonitis, which may eventually lead to total loss of the animal.
The precautionary insertion of a magnet has also proven effective.
